CIMS WEEKLY CHARTS: WEEK ENDING 11/24/22 + BLACK FRIDAY

It is official…. the holiday shopping season has begun.
We kicked things off last week with Black Friday and Small Business Saturday, and I am thrilled to see that this was a good one for our stores. I have rounded up a few of the CIMS stores' first-hand accounts of the weekend to share some stats and stories with you. I always enjoy reading these and appreciate everyone that is a part of bringing success to our stores.

Oh and since this message is falling on December 1st... I had to break this one out :) I hope you all find your December will be Magic again!

John Kunz: Waterloo Records - Austin, TX
Black Friday 2022 at Waterloo Records was really great, but also very different! Overall store sales were up a whopping 17.9%, but this year's crop of BF titles didn't sell for us in the quantities as in the past, even though they represented 45% of our total sales volume that day. Regardless, sales remained very strong on Small Business Sat., (up 31.9%) when our remaining BF titles went online. Sunday sales were also up (8.3%), so our BF weekend sales were up 19.6% overall.. However, yesterday we marked down nearly half of the BF titles (something we've never done before) for a Cyber Monday Weeklong Sale, to bring today's high prices more in line with pre-inflation times. They are good titles that will likely sell through this holiday shopping season.

The first couple of shoppers in our line arrived at 5am, and there were 75 folks in line for our 8am opening. We were able to clear the line by about 8:30, with a grand total of 105 shoppers, prior to general entry. Overall, we clocked 702 transactions that day, purchasing 2440 items.

Big thanks go out to everyone again that made this day happen: the artists, managers, labels, distributors, one-stops, sponsors, 1400 indie record stores, Carrie, Andrea, Michael, Eric, and most of all, the very dedicated and talented crew here at Waterloo Records!

Greetings!!

It has taken me days to get my act together after this past weekend~ WOW Absolutely the best BLACK FRIDAY in our 48-year-old HISTORY!!

First customer in line at 4 am. We opened at 9 to about 100 marching through the doors. They lined up and patiently waited their turn into the Backroom Lounge, where all the RSD titles are carefully displayed. It is the most efficient system to date and did not let us down! We moved the bulk crowd within an hour and 1/2, all were happy to get 98% of their desires. From there on it turned into typical Record Archive Party mode! 2 live bands kept the bar hopping and the main floor shoppers were scooping up as much as possible! This year we feature BUY 1 GET 1 Free on all movies- dvds, blu rays, laser discs & even VHS! Tons of $1 records went out the door. Our LPS bins were the place to be!!

My staff handled it all beautifully and I could not be more pleased or proud to work with this team every day.

Greetings, Everyone--

Another successful Black Friday has come and gone! It was full of happy customers, busy employees and ca-chinging cash registers. Customer after customer told us how happy they are that we’re still here and thriving. Our San Jose store kept the appointment system we’ve been using since the onset of the pandemic (at our customers’ requests) and it went almost flawlessly. The Santa Cruz location uses a numbering system for the people in line and called them up in groups, also proving to be a solid system.

As always, many thanks to everyone who participated in making Black Friday happen, with an ultra big thanks to Carrie Colliton, Michael Kurtz, Andrea Paschal, Eric Levin and Luann Myers! Below are a few stats for both stores and our Top 25 1st day sellers (the indie exclusives) broken out by store location. Many thanks, and have a wonderful holiday season!

Chad Dryden: Record Exchange - Boise, ID
Hello industry friends,

Here’s a recap of the 2022 RSD Black Friday/Small Business Saturday at The Record Exchange.

Firstly, we set two new records over the weekend: earliest in line ever – for any RSD-related event – with one of our super customers braving the cold at 10:11pm Friday night (she posted the exact time on Instagram); and the largest Black Friday sales day in the store’s history, up 16% from the previous record set in 2021.

By the time we opened our doors, we had 50 people in line who were happy to step inside and warm up after shivering through overnight temperatures in the mid-20s. Almost to the dot we can count on 50 people each year for Black Friday, and this group represents our diehard customers who wouldn’t miss one of these events. A TV news crew visited in the morning for the first time ever to capture it all, including an interview with our first-in-line customer. The morning rush was over by 8:30am, but unlike previous years, the lull did not last – we were steady from the go, and it wasn’t yet 9:30 before the store started filling up again, and we only got busier and busier until we hit our crest mid-afternoon. We had great weather – sunny with a high of 43 degrees – and great energy in the store all day.

As for the exclusives, it was nice to have the least number of heavy allocations in years, and in most cases, people got what they wanted. We ordered with the holiday season and beyond in mind, and with fewer allocations and less demand than expected for several titles, the result was, we’re now sitting on a lot of excess inventory. Our sell-through rate was 39%, compared to 48% in 2021 and 43.5% in 2019.

Small Business Saturday was another strong day, but mellow by comparison. It was busy, and the weather was good (43 degrees and no precipitation), but it wasn’t OMG-busy like Black Friday, and we ended the day $700 short of 2021. We’ll take it, though, after a 58% increase over 2020 on our record-setting 2021 SBS.

We finished strong on Sunday, up 12% for the day over 2021, putting us at 8.5% up for the weekend over 2021.
Thank you to everyone who put the time and energy into making these exclusives happen for our stores. We’re already looking forward to RSD 2023.

Hi Everyone,

Bonnie Raitt was in Birmingham last night, and what a lovely evening it was.

I have such huge admiration for her as an artist; her skill and talent as a musician, the longevity of her career, and the place she has carved out for herself in our music history.

I first met Bonnie back in 2015, when CIMS celebrated our 20th anniversary in New Orleans. She holds a special place in our hearts and has a connection to many of our CIMS stores. Maybe that is because she is not only a kick-ass musician, but she is also truly a music fan. It was really wonderful to have her be a part of that important event.

I want to send a special thank you to Bonnie Raitt, Kathy and Vanessa from Bonnie’s team for always remembering CIMS and taking good care of us when Bonnie comes to town. She was our special guest several years ago, and it was truly an honor to be hers last night.

CIMS WEEKLY CHARTS: WEEK ENDING 10/27/22

Hi Everyone,

Lots going on here. For one, we are all gearing up for the holiday season which is suddenly upon us. It seems like it was just weeks ago that we were all together in New Orleans at RSD Summer Camp.

In CIMS news, we held our annual CIMS Board meeting in Atlanta, GA last week. I always feel like Summer Camp gets the conversation started about what’s new at indie retail and where we need to put our attention, and then our Board meetings are always an excellent follow up to that and serve as a more intense focus group for those indie retail initiatives. We had a great couple of days of meetings. I came home with lots of ideas and a slightly lengthier to do list.

That meeting was just another reminder of how important that in-person time together is, and how much can come out of just a couple of days of discussions. Thanks to Mike Fratt (Board Chair), Paige Brodsky (Board Secretary), Alayna Alderman, Jim Bland, Terry Currier, Justin Johnson, Sandy Bitman, Rand Foster and Stephen Judge- our CIMS Board, for your time and efforts. Thanks to Carrie Colliton (RSD) for stopping in to spend some time with us as well.

Going back to our Summer Camp, I remember having the discussion in our CIMS meetings about how many years of experience we had just in that room alone, and this week The Record Exchange in Boise Idaho is beginning their celebration of 45 years of bringing music to the people. The Record Exchange was started in 1977 by Jil Sevy and Michael Bunnell (our previous CIMS Executive Director) and last year they turned over the keys to Chad Dryden, Erica Sparlin Dryden, Catherine Merrick and Glenn Newkirk. They are kicking things ff with a huge sales event this weekend and a big celebration event in the works for this spring, so stay tuned for more info there. Congrats to everyone involved with The Record Exchange and here is to many more years!

CIMS WEEKLY CHARTS: WEEK ENDING 10/20/22

Hi Everyone,

For some Midnights come early, for others it comes late.

Despite quite a few setbacks, I don’t think there is any real surprise on our #1 on the CIMS debut charts this week. Our stores continue to prove “You can’t keep a good man down”. With that in mind, there were still parties and celebrations because they continue to be creative and certainly know how to make the best of a situation. The stores were also able to make lots of fans happy with the signed records, so thanks to the team at Universal and Republic for making that happen with us.

You knew this was coming. All you have to do is look at my email signature & know how big of a fan I am of The Whigs. I’ve been fortunate enough to see them three times on the tour behind *How Do You Burn*. Greg & Co. haven’t lost anything & come across with as much aggression as they ever have. With a trifecta of albums since reforming, this one seems to fit best with their classic output from the 90s. Lead track, “I’ll Make You See God” rocks as hard as anything they’ve ever done! Slow burns “Please, Baby, Please” & “Domino & Jimmy” ache with a pain you feel in every breath Greg pleads about lost love & regret. When *Fever to Tell* arrived, and if floors could talk, my hardwoods would have begged for us to take the countless dance parties somewhere else. Every album since, I have loved this band much like a child loves a special stuffed animal, and just like rediscovering that old friend, there is no love lost with *Cool it Down*. Maybe it is because Karen O (especially) is such a reminder that we all grow up and evolve, but you don’t have to lose that childhood spark and Nick and Brian provide the perfect landscape to get lost in that world. So, yeah (yeah, yeah)…I am loving this album, the hardwoods... not so much!

Hi Everyone,

I have to say it has been exciting to see the return of tours and live music, and I have a feeling I am going to be very busy this fall! It has also been fantastic to see our stores get back to in-store performances and appearances. This is such an important part of the record store experience, and in addition to shows themselves, these events create special moments and memories for years to come. In-stores bring everything full circle when you get a chance to see your favorite artist perform or meet them in the very aisles where you bought their albums.

Speaking of, Fingerprints Music in Long Beach California has been on quite a run with a very successful Yungblud instore, a Jackson Wang meet and greet, and then closing out the week with a signing with none other than the legend…OZZY!

I know how much work goes into putting these together on every level from the artist, labels, management and especially the stores and their staff, so I think it is important to give a shout our and thanks to everyone that helps to make in-stores happen.

Thanks for continuing to make these moments happen and creating the memories!

Hi Everyone,

Last week marked the return of RSD Summer Camp to New Orleans, LA. This event is another way that we as RSD work every day to support, connect and lift up the indie retail community. It was a week of lively and healthy discussions about the state of the industry on every level and a chance for people to meet face to face to share ideas. In addition to Summer Camp, we held a day of Coalition meetings and, speaking of Coalitions, we were also very excited to welcome new Coalition FAMS to our group! When we took on planning the first RSD Summer Camp in 2016, it was an attempt to bring all of the Coalitions that are the founders of Record Store Day together, every year since then we have worked to open to more RSD pledged and participating stores as well. It is so exciting to me to watch our indie retail community grow and thrive and we are already looking forward to getting to work on 2023!

A massive thank you to the labels, distributors, one-stops and vendors for your support and participation. You all are a HUGE part of what makes bringing this group together possible.

Thanks to all of the stores for showing up to do this thing- we make it happen for you! To our RSD international partners that made the trip to be there with us, thank you! Thanks to Silversun Pickups and Lissie for being the soundtrack to this event (and the Lissie Pop!) and to Jon Darnielle and Dawn Richard for the amazing discussion.

Hugs and gratitude to Michael, Eric and Luann for being such excellent Coalition and RSD partners, to my partner in crime Carrie Colliton who makes the job of planning and running a conference fun, to everyone that was behind the scenes helping to make this thing happen, and to the Hotel Monteleone for making our job look easy.

It was personally great to get to see everyone connect with friends new and old, and I look forward to doing it again soon!

Hi Everyone,

It is hard to believe that in just a few days many of us will be reconvening in New Orleans for RSD Summer Camp, a conference built for and to celebrate our stores. This will be our first time gathering since the 2019 conference, and I am thrilled to be back in such a great city with our stores, labels, and distribution friends. It is sure to be a week of fun and lively discussions and I hope to send everyone home with lots of exciting new ideas and feeling rejuvenated from connecting with old and new friends in our business. In the meantime, still lots to do to get things ready for everyone so, back to work! See you in the Big Easy!

It’s not that far removed from 9/11, time-wise. We were sitting in offices a few blocks away from Ground Zero, as Matador introduced us to this new band. The track they played was "NYC". As the wall of guitars built with Paul Banks repeating, “It’s up to me now, Turn On The Bright Lights,” this overwhelming sense of “everything was going to be okay & we’ll get through this” washed over me. It still sticks with me, twenty-plus years later anytime I put the needle on the record. Needless to say, I’ve been a fan of Interpol since that day.

With each listen, I am really loving *The Other Side of Make-Believe*. I love the space. This go-around, they seem to have slowed things down, which really showcases Sam Fogarino’s inventiveness behind the kit. Daniel’s guitar is still front & center, but more restrained, allowing one to really soak up all that is going on in each song. I look forward to the tour, because in a live setting, I can only imagine how *The Other Side of Make-Believe*, will make me feel. I’ll be right there, watching Sam for the most part, as the sounds wash over me. It’s in those moments that life is perfect!
