"Clear"
(Fantasy)

Russell Cothran - ThinkIndie Sales & Marketing
This week’s pick comes after a conversation on what came first… Chicago House or Detroit Techno? Growing up in Detroit, it was all about Juan Atkins, Derrick May, & Kevin Saunderson, sometimes known as The Belleville Three. So, going down the house/techno rabbit hole, I chose the 12” that started it all for me… Cybrotron’s “Clear.”  To this day, any time I spin this, people will get out of their seats & move!

CIMS WEEKLY CHARTS: WEEK ENDING 3/23/23

Hi Everyone,

Music Biz just announced all their finalists for the upcoming Bizzy Awards. Lots of great contenders for awards this year, especially for the Frontline Innovators Award. This is an award that is given to a retail store who has shown exceptional inventiveness and ingenuity in their practices during the past year in their interactions with consumers. I am thrilled that we have two CIMS stores that are finalists for the award, T-Bones in Hattiesburg Mississippi and Park Ave in Orlando Florida! The other two finalists are DBS Sounds and Gallery of Sound. I would like to send a massive congrats out to each one of you and I am looking forward to celebrating the recipient of this award at Music Biz in May.

Drayton Farley
Twenty On High
(Thirty Tigers / Hargrove Records)

Scott Register - ThinkIndie A&R
Love when my pick gets to be a homeboy. Farley lives in Alabaster, AL (a suburb of Birmingham) and he has suddenly burst on the scene with his new album. Why? It’s the songs. This is a collection of excellent songs. “Norfolk Blues,” ”Wasted Youth,” ”Something Wrong Inside My Head,” “The Alabama Moon” (I had a listener text me in tears about this one)…HELL! They are all good. This one is full of Bama. Give it a listen from start to finish.

CIMS WEEKLY CHARTS: WEEK ENDING 3/2/23

Hi Everyone,

Ben Kweller has been a longtime friend of CIMS, ThinkIndie and indie retail in general, and it is with great sadness that we learned that he and his wife Liz lost their son Dorian last week.

News of the loss of someone so young with so much life ahead of them is always so hard, so I wanted to extend our condolences to Ben and his family while they are going through such a heartbreaking time. May they one day find peace with this devastating event in their lives.

I am also sharing their note remembering their son Dorian Zev Kweller.

Our son Dorian died in a freak car accident on Monday, February 27th, 2023. He was 16 years old. He was going the speed limit, phone in its holder, seatbelt on, doing everything right. He was freestyle rapping to his favorite instrumental playlist when an oncoming truck drifted towards him. Dorian swerved into the shoulder to avoid the oncoming truck. While in the shoulder, a downed broken tree branch from the recent freeze came through the window and hit him on the right side of his head. He died instantly. The airbags didn’t go off, the car wasn’t overly damaged. He would’ve walked away from this had it not been for that one branch. When Dorian was born, our main wish for him was to have a zest for life. That wish came true times a hundred. Our baby was riding high until his final minute on earth.

Lizzy and I are starting a foundation in his honor. It will serve young musicians and skateboarders (Dorian's two favorite things). We've set up a
GoFundMe to get everything off the ground. Please consider donating something, even if it's $1. We are going to do great things for young people and I'd love to have you along for the ride. www.gofundme.com/doriankweller

Dorian Zev Kweller came into this world on May 30th, 2006. He took his first breath in a tiny NYC delivery room while the music of Mason Jennings played in the background. Dorian received his first drum set at the age of 2 and played a 4/4 rock beat before his father could show him how. He was a wordsmith from the time he could speak - rhyming and freestyling from his car seat to the backyard, to the bed.

In 2008 we relocated to Austin, TX where we spent countless days hiking the greenbelt and swimming in local swimming holes. When Dorian had his mind set on something he was unstoppable. His first mission was to learn how to skateboard. Music and skating ultimately became his two lifelong passions.

Dorian attended Habibi’s Hutch preschool and Zilker Elementary school where he made lifelong friends. During his time at Zilker, he received the “Friend To All'' and “Do It My Own Way” awards. While these accolades became loving jokes inside the household, they were spot on. He truly was a unique, outside of the box thinking ‘friend to all’.  One of his strongest bonds was with his brother Judah, who was born in 2010. Dorian protected and adored Judah and they were deeply intertwined. Dorian was a spiritual person who perceived deeper meaning in life. He was authentic, kind and generous. He saw the good in everyone and was never embarrassed to be himself because he was confident in who he was.

In 2018 we moved to Dripping Springs where Dorian attended Skybridge Academy (now known as The Appamada School) then Dripping Springs High where he continued to expand his vast circle of friends. He was heavily involved in the local Dripping Springs Skate Club and the Austin skate scene at large. Dorian cherished every minute he had with his skate friends and knew every public and private skate spot in central Texas. Dorian was an integral member of the acclaimed DSHS music program where he played the bass drum and tenor/quad drums. His expressive drumming helped bring DSHS to the State Finals two years in a row.

His knack for wordplay came alive in high school as did his guitar playing and audio production skills. 2021 was the year that Dorian got serious about his life as an artist. He worked under his middle name, ZEV, which is Hebrew for “wolf”. Every day after school, he oscillated between hip-hop beats, acoustic ballads, indie-guitar rockers, and lofi chill-wave grooves. One of the last traits that Dorian developed, and perhaps the most stunning, was his lush singing voice. ZEV released music to the public for the first time on July 1st, 2022.

On February 25th, 2023, two days before Dorian’s passing, TikTok superstar, Masked Mortal discovered his song “SH3” and noted ZEV’s “voice that could cut butter.” ZEV was scheduled to make his live debut at SXSW on March 17th, 2023. He was looking forward to his senior year of High School and visiting potential colleges with his eye on Boston’s Berklee College of Music. Music was looking like a viable career path for him and at the same time Volatile Skateboards offered him a sponsorship deal just six hours before the car crash.

On Friday, March 3rd, 2023, we laid Dorian to rest on our family’s ranch. The outpouring of love from our Dripping Springs, Austin, and worldwide communities has been incredible. In his short life, Dorian radiated positivity and spread it to everyone he touched. He was brave, adventurous, and lived each day to the fullest. He was witty and loved making people laugh even when it was at his own expense. He loved deeply and was loved deeply. We know that his powerful light and music will continue to make this world a happier, more peaceful place.

xo Ben and Lizzy

rad music.

CIMS WEEKLY CHARTS: WEEK ENDING 2/23/23

Hey Everyone,

Not a lot to report on this week other than the fact that I am listening to the new Gorillaz on repeat, and by the looks of our chart this week, I am not the only one.Cracker Island is serving as my soundtrack as we are busy lining things up for Record Store Day on the ThinkIndie side of things. We are also starting to make plans for Summer Camp in August and MusicBiz in May which, by the way this year has started off so far, will both be here before we know it. I am looking forward to reconnecting with everyone soon. We will have lots of CIMS stores in attendance at MusicBiz this year, so looking forward to productive meetings as well. We are currently in the process of booking those now, and we will be doing collective Coalition meetings (CIMS, AIMS, DORS) so if you haven’t already- be sure to get in touch with Carrie or myself to get something on the books.

Here are the charts for the week.

CIMS WEEKLY CHARTS: WEEK ENDING 2/9/23

Hi Everyone,

First off, I usually like to use this message to talk about things going on in the industry, with CIMS or highlighting our stores, but every once in a while, I have to fan out because… music is my first love. That love is always at the heart of why I do what I do every day.

About this week I have three words… Rihanna’s. Halftime. Show.

My love for Rihanna runs deep. She is eternally the coolest, and she kills it every single time- this Superbowl performance being no exception. I, like everyone else, am hoping we finally get that new album in ’23… but in the meantime I will be rocking the MVP and playing my Riri faves on repeat.

In other music news… it is official, the Record Store Day 2023 List is live today! We have a great lineup this year. I want to say a huge thanks to all the labels that continue to put in the work to bring these amazing releases to help us celebrate music in its physical format, not only on Record Store Day but every day. Even more important is the celebration of all of our incredible record stores. If music is our salvation, then the record shop is our church!

Here are the charts for the week.

CIMS WEEKLY CHARTS: WEEK ENDING 1/26/23

Hi Everyone,

This week I wanted to send big love to Rochester, NY to our Record Archive family. In the early hours of Tuesday morning, Alayna Alderman (Vice President of Record Archive) and her husband Reo responded to the dreaded middle of the night alarm call to find quite the site; that someone had attempted to drive through the front door to gain entrance to the store.

These stories are always so disheartening especially when it affects the small businesses that are there to serve the community. However, Alayna and her team refused to let this major inconvenience get them down. They got creative with getting their customers in and out of the store and were resourceful when resources were limited (turns out the commercial door timelines are rivaling vinyl production!) By yesterday, they were back up and running with a new door to welcome their customers to their weekly Wednesday Happy Hour. Stories like this (especially with our stores) inspire and remind me that when you get knocked down, you can’t stay down. You get up, brush yourself off and get back at it.

Cheers to Record Archive for doing just that.

If you are looking for somewhere to point your Record Store love this week, hint hint… https://recordarchive.com/.

CIMS WEEKLY CHARTS: WEEK ENDING 1/19/23

Hi Everyone,

As you know, I always like to highlight good things happening at our stores and this week I wanted to share something cool from Looney Tunes in West Babylon, NY.

Looney Tunes is starting a music scholarship program for graduating seniors going into college with a major in the field of music in honor of John Sadowski. Many of you know John from his time in the music business and as a long-time employee at Looney Tunes. This is a great way to honor their friend and to keep John’s love of music alive.

Please check out more of the details on this great cause and thanks to Karl for sharing this!

CIMS WEEKLY CHARTS: WEEK ENDING 1/12/23 + YEAR END SURVEY RESULTS

Hi everyone,

This week I have the results of our 2022 CIMS Year End Survey. As we know with independent retail, every store is different and unique with their approach to business, but I always look forward to the results of this survey when we get a comprehensive look into how our CIMS group, as a whole, faired for the year.

Here we go!

How did your December 2022 compare to December 2021?

Overall, the group was up 12% for the month of December with the high being up 34% and the low being down 3%

How did your vinyl sales in December 2022 compare to December 2021?

Overall, the group was up 18% for the month of December with the high being up 55% and the low being down 3%

How did CD sales in December 2022 compare to December 2021?

Overall, the group was down 3.4% for the month of December.

How did vinyl sales for 2022 overall compare to 2021?

Overall, the group was up 10% for 2022, with the high being up 39% and the low being down 10%. Multiple comments said availability of titles affected this.

How did CD sales for 2022 overall compare to 2021?

Overall, the group was up 1% for 2022, with the high being up 25% and the low being down 13%

What percentage of your overall sales were used product for 2022?

Overall, about 25%

How did 2022 used sales compare to 2021 used sales?

Overall, up about 1%, with the high being up 12% and the low being down 10%

What percentage of your 2022 sales were in-store sales vs online?

Overall, about 87% were in-store sales, with online sales making up 13% of the biz.

What were the product lines or genres that stuck out as big winners for the holiday season and all year?

There was a great range of answers including:
Catalog LPs- number 1 answer
Autographed items
Mystery Bags
There seemed to be an increase in all kinds of gift items as well

Were there any contributing or diminishing factors that affected holiday sales and throughout the year?

Top answers were the price and availability of vinyl. Also, many of our stores were hit really hard with all kinds of crazy weather especially over the month of December, which I know had an impact on our December numbers.

All in all, and despite the hurdles, the stores all seemed to have a strong year.  In 2023 I would love to see us all work to do what we can to keep vinyl pricing down where possible (I know this is a tough one with all of the supply issues, but let’s keep it on the list), working to make sure we make some room at the press to make sure those catalog titles can get into the hands of the stores because they are performing, and also to keep these stores front of mind and at least on equal footing with everyone else on new releases as well. They remain an important piece of the new release equation and they want to be able to satisfy their customers along with everyone else.

Thanks for reading and reach out if you have any questions or want to discuss.

CIMS WEEKLY CHARTS: WEEK ENDING 12/1/22

Hey Everyone,

I know I have said it, but it is hard to believe we are closing in on the end of 2022. It has been quite a year that seems to have gone by in the blink of an eye. That said, lots of balls in the air this week just as things are trying to wrap up, so more on that next week…

CIMS WEEKLY CHARTS: WEEK ENDING 11/24/22 + BLACK FRIDAY

Hi everyone,

It is official…. the holiday shopping season has begun.
We kicked things off last week with Black Friday and Small Business Saturday, and I am thrilled to see that this was a good one for our stores. I have rounded up a few of the CIMS stores' first-hand accounts of the weekend to share some stats and stories with you. I always enjoy reading these and appreciate everyone that is a part of bringing success to our stores.

Oh and since this message is falling on December 1st... I had to break this one out :) I hope you all find your December will be Magic again!

Here are a few recaps, enjoy!
Andrea

John Kunz: Waterloo Records - Austin, TX
Black Friday 2022 at Waterloo Records was really great, but also very different! Overall store sales were up a whopping 17.9%, but this year's crop of BF titles didn't sell for us in the quantities as in the past, even though they represented 45% of our total sales volume that day. Regardless, sales remained very strong on Small Business Sat., (up 31.9%) when our remaining BF titles went online. Sunday sales were also up (8.3%), so our BF weekend sales were up 19.6% overall.. However, yesterday we marked down nearly half of the BF titles (something we've never done before) for a Cyber Monday Weeklong Sale, to bring today's high prices more in line with pre-inflation times. They are good titles that will likely sell through this holiday shopping season.

The first couple of shoppers in our line arrived at 5am, and there were 75 folks in line for our 8am opening. We were able to clear the line by about 8:30, with a grand total of 105 shoppers, prior to general entry. Overall, we clocked 702 transactions that day, purchasing 2440 items.

Big thanks go out to everyone again that made this day happen: the artists, managers, labels, distributors, one-stops, sponsors, 1400 indie record stores, Carrie, Andrea, Michael, Eric, and most of all, the very dedicated and talented crew here at Waterloo Records!

Alayna Alderman:  Record Archive - Rochester, NY
Greetings!!

It has taken me days to get my act together after this past weekend~ WOW Absolutely the best BLACK FRIDAY in our 48-year-old HISTORY!!

First customer in line at 4 am. We opened at 9 to about 100 marching through the doors. They lined up and patiently waited their turn into the Backroom Lounge, where all the RSD titles are carefully displayed. It is the most efficient system to date and did not let us down! We moved the bulk crowd within an hour and 1/2, all were happy to get 98% of their desires. From there on it turned into typical Record Archive Party mode! 2 live bands kept the bar hopping and the main floor shoppers were scooping up as much as possible! This year we feature BUY 1 GET 1 Free on all movies- dvds, blu rays, laser discs & even VHS! Tons of $1 records went out the door. Our LPS bins were the place to be!!

My staff handled it all beautifully and I could not be more pleased or proud to work with this team every day.

Greetings, Everyone--

Another successful Black Friday has come and gone! It was full of happy customers, busy employees and ca-chinging cash registers. Customer after customer told us how happy they are that we’re still here and thriving. Our San Jose store kept the appointment system we’ve been using since the onset of the pandemic (at our customers’ requests) and it went almost flawlessly. The Santa Cruz location uses a numbering system for the people in line and called them up in groups, also proving to be a solid system.

As always, many thanks to everyone who participated in making Black Friday happen, with an ultra big thanks to Carrie Colliton, Michael Kurtz, Andrea Paschal, Eric Levin and Luann Myers! Below are a few stats for both stores and our Top 25 1st day sellers (the indie exclusives) broken out by store location. Many thanks, and have a wonderful holiday season!

--Paige

San Jose
--Black Friday was up 36% over last year and was our biggest Black Friday EVER!
--68% sell-through first day on exclusives

Santa Cruz
--Black Friday was up 8% over last year.
--37% sell-through first day on exclusives

Chad Dryden: Record Exchange - Boise, ID
Hello industry friends,

Here’s a recap of the 2022 RSD Black Friday/Small Business Saturday at The Record Exchange.

Firstly, we set two new records over the weekend: earliest in line ever – for any RSD-related event – with one of our super customers braving the cold at 10:11pm Friday night (she posted the exact time on Instagram); and the largest Black Friday sales day in the store’s history, up 16% from the previous record set in 2021.

By the time we opened our doors, we had 50 people in line who were happy to step inside and warm up after shivering through overnight temperatures in the mid-20s. Almost to the dot we can count on 50 people each year for Black Friday, and this group represents our diehard customers who wouldn’t miss one of these events. A TV news crew visited in the morning for the first time ever to capture it all, including an interview with our first-in-line customer. The morning rush was over by 8:30am, but unlike previous years, the lull did not last – we were steady from the go, and it wasn’t yet 9:30 before the store started filling up again, and we only got busier and busier until we hit our crest mid-afternoon. We had great weather – sunny with a high of 43 degrees – and great energy in the store all day.

As for the exclusives, it was nice to have the least number of heavy allocations in years, and in most cases, people got what they wanted. We ordered with the holiday season and beyond in mind, and with fewer allocations and less demand than expected for several titles, the result was, we’re now sitting on a lot of excess inventory. Our sell-through rate was 39%, compared to 48% in 2021 and 43.5% in 2019.

Small Business Saturday was another strong day, but mellow by comparison. It was busy, and the weather was good (43 degrees and no precipitation), but it wasn’t OMG-busy like Black Friday, and we ended the day $700 short of 2021. We’ll take it, though, after a 58% increase over 2020 on our record-setting 2021 SBS.

We finished strong on Sunday, up 12% for the day over 2021, putting us at 8.5% up for the weekend over 2021.
Thank you to everyone who put the time and energy into making these exclusives happen for our stores. We’re already looking forward to RSD 2023.

Wherever you are and however you celebrate, we wish you a happy holiday season and look forward to working with you in the new year.

CIMS WEEKLY CHARTS: WEEK ENDING 11/3/22

Hi Everyone,

Bonnie Raitt was in Birmingham last night, and what a lovely evening it was.

I have such huge admiration for her as an artist; her skill and talent as a musician, the longevity of her career, and the place she has carved out for herself in our music history.

I first met Bonnie back in 2015, when CIMS celebrated our 20th anniversary in New Orleans. She holds a special place in our hearts and has a connection to many of our CIMS stores. Maybe that is because she is not only a kick-ass musician, but she is also truly a music fan. It was really wonderful to have her be a part of that important event.

I want to send a special thank you to Bonnie Raitt, Kathy and Vanessa from Bonnie’s team for always remembering CIMS and taking good care of us when Bonnie comes to town. She was our special guest several years ago, and it was truly an honor to be hers last night.

Be sure if you haven’t already to spend some time with Just Like That… out now on Redwing records.

CIMS WEEKLY CHARTS: WEEK ENDING 10/27/22

Hi Everyone,

Lots going on here. For one, we are all gearing up for the holiday season which is suddenly upon us. It seems like it was just weeks ago that we were all together in New Orleans at RSD Summer Camp.

In CIMS news, we held our annual CIMS Board meeting in Atlanta, GA last week. I always feel like Summer Camp gets the conversation started about what’s new at indie retail and where we need to put our attention, and then our Board meetings are always an excellent follow up to that and serve as a more intense focus group for those indie retail initiatives. We had a great couple of days of meetings. I came home with lots of ideas and a slightly lengthier to do list.

That meeting was just another reminder of how important that in-person time together is, and how much can come out of just a couple of days of discussions. Thanks to Mike Fratt (Board Chair), Paige Brodsky (Board Secretary), Alayna Alderman, Jim Bland, Terry Currier, Justin Johnson, Sandy Bitman, Rand Foster and Stephen Judge- our CIMS Board, for your time and efforts. Thanks to Carrie Colliton (RSD) for stopping in to spend some time with us as well.

Going back to our Summer Camp, I remember having the discussion in our CIMS meetings about how many years of experience we had just in that room alone, and this week The Record Exchange in Boise Idaho is beginning their celebration of 45 years of bringing music to the people. The Record Exchange was started in 1977 by Jil Sevy and Michael Bunnell (our previous CIMS Executive Director) and last year they turned over the keys to Chad Dryden, Erica Sparlin Dryden, Catherine Merrick and Glenn Newkirk. They are kicking things ff with a huge sales event this weekend and a big celebration event in the works for this spring, so stay tuned for more info there. Congrats to everyone involved with The Record Exchange and here is to many more years!

That’s all from me this week and here are the charts.

CIMS WEEKLY CHARTS: WEEK ENDING 10/20/22

Hi Everyone,

For some Midnights come early, for others it comes late.

Despite quite a few setbacks, I don’t think there is any real surprise on our #1 on the CIMS debut charts this week. Our stores continue to prove “You can’t keep a good man down”. With that in mind, there were still parties and celebrations because they continue to be creative and certainly know how to make the best of a situation. The stores were also able to make lots of fans happy with the signed records, so thanks to the team at Universal and Republic for making that happen with us.

Check out this party scene video from Park Ave CDs in Orlando, FL!

It is hard to have a release the same day as Taylor, so I would also like to give a shout-out to Domino Records on our #2 debut this week. I am personally loving the new tunes from Artic Monkeys. The Car is headed in the right direction :)

Here are the charts,

CIMS WEEKLY CHARTS: WEEK ENDING 10/13/22

Hi Everyone,

This week we are getting some proper fall chill in the air in Birmingham, and this morning I found myself digging into the abyss of the closet for my trusted flannel shirt.

That, and a cup of hot joe, set the perfect tone for this articlefeaturing Matt Vaughan and Easy Street Records. West Seattle represent!

If you find yourself in the PNW anytime soon be sure to pop into Easy Street, it is a stop not to be missed.
